There are a lot of problems in the beauty community. Racism, the constant promotion of mindless consumerism, bullying, promotion of plastic surgery to children./teens and on and on. The latest problem that has been highlighted is an ingredient that is used in almost everything beauty related. You can find it in eyeshadow, blush, highlighter, foundation etc. It's also used in things like paint, insulation, toothpaste, electronics, the list is endless.
The problem with Mica is not all of it is sourced responsibility.
Check out the short video documentary Refinery did on the subject and another video I found that the Today Show did.
It's sad that in 2019 things like this are still happening and heartbreaking that children are dying mining, and don't get the opportunity to go to school.
It does seem that Lush (I used to be obsessed with them!) has come up with their own solution- synthetic Mica. But that doesn't seem to be the best answer the the problem. If it was responsibly mined and the miners (adult miners-no child labor) were paid a living and fair wage, I think that would be a better solution. That way places rich in natural resources could get the money they should be getting.
But there's so much corruption and greed in this world.
I don't buy much make-up anymore. I really try to use up what I have and buy responsibly. But I would love to see a makeup company step up and make sure their supply chain is clean and they are paying a fair and living wage for the ingredients that are used in our products. I would support it.
And of course, all of the multi-billion dollar industries should take responsibility and work to make sure child labor is not being used in their supply chain.
I just thought I would share. Awareness of the problem is the first step in trying to solve it.
