Hair Products as a Kid

I thought it might be fun to break up the constant reviews with something different. I've been reading the hair boards- of course- and one thing you always hear people mention is how back in the day their mom used grease and this or that and their hair was down to theirs butts. I really think it was the fact that when we were younger we always had plaits, didn't use relaxers or heat and that allowed the hair to flourish.

So that got me thinking back to what was used on me as a kid. I never had hair down to my butt. It got to a good length but it always shrunk so you can never tell how long my hair truly is. My hair is the same today, I embrace the shrinkage.  It was definitely longer when I was younger...then it seemed really short in 5th/6th grade. Which is around the time I got a relaxer. I want to talk more about the relaxer in a another post...

First thing I remember was White Rain. I don't remember if my Mom used this often to wash my hair...but I remember the bottle when I was around 5/6 and that was when I was bored enough to just randomly read product packing.

I used to hate leaning over the tub to get my hair washed. Sometime later she switched to this- I think she used this more on my sister though...I remember the watermelon scent and the blue bottle the most. I didn't know they discontinued these now....

For conditioner- she loved this Mane and Tail one. Now that I think about it, I think she used the Shampoo sometimes too. I'm not sure if horses really use this stuff- but I guess the thinking is if it gives horses long thick, and shiny hair- why not use it? I don't know if it's truly used on horses or just marketing but  I do remember buying it in high school and not liking it much. But I did have a relaxer then so maybe I should try it on my relaxed hair.

Next up detangler. . I was looking for this a few months back but it's long since discontinued. We always had a bottle of this in the cabinet. I thought the kids on the bottle were so cute growing up and loved their hair! I don't remember if it worked...but I did really love the way it smelled. I even remember the comb my Mom used to use- I feel like I saw it a few years back- it was a Goody Teal Comb with beige and white on the tips. I don't have the best memories of getting my hair detangled with it though- My Mom was ROUGH! I used to think I was tender-headed but I think she just didn't know how to be gentle.

And GREASE! Who doesn't have memories of getting their scalp greased. Getting your hair parted and then a healthy slather of grease. I ditched it after high school. But I did have a brief stint with Blue Magic grease. My Mom kept the BB Super Gro grease on hand- she used Sulfur 8 herself. I never really had scalp problems - no dryness and no itchiness...unless I used certain hair products. These days there are better oils- but I might buy a jar for nostalgia purposes if I see it in the store.

I think that about sums it up...very simple. I can't think of anything else used on my  hair as a kid.

But I did want to share my new shower cap. I bought it from Regal Ivy. I usually use the cheap plastic ones for conditioning my hair- but I need a nice one for the next time I straighten my hair and I wanted a good quality one. This one is handmade in a beautiful color from a black owned company- Regal Ivy!
It has satin on the inside too which is in a pretty green shade- so you can wear it reversible. I'll be showering in style 😁

What do you remember using as a kid? Are the products still around?

UPDATED to add Tressemme! My Mom loved buying the big ol bottle's of Tresseme. I don't remember them working that well in my hair- but they seemed to work for her! Their conditioners always smelled like grout to me though.

Carol's Daughter Hair Balm

I know, your asking yourself why I'm reviewing another Carols Daughter Hair Product when I clearly didn't like the first two so much. Unfortunately I bought four products at the same time and I don't believe in wasting so I figured I minus well try them all and write a review.

This is part of Jada's Dynamic Duo. But I've never really seen Jada's real hair in a wash and go so I didn't have much hope in it.

It's Claims :

Experience frizz-free hair with one of Jada Pinkett-Smith’s favorites! Hair Balm’s nutrient –rich Soy Oil and Sweet Almond Oil combination produce perfect shine, moisture and manageability without build-up. The rich blend of protein, and nourishing B vitamins and minerals are specially formulated to prevent breakage and promote healthy hair growth.

The first thing I noticed about this product was the STENCH. It smells highly perfumed and is just plain nauseating. It seems like if they tweaked it a little it might smell good. But it smells like heavily scented Vaseline. Just plain nasty. The next thing I noticed is the texture is like liquid Vaseline. It's pretty greasy. I also noticed it acts like Vaseline. It seals DRYNESS into my hair and makes my poor ends so brittle it knots onto itself and falls out in little balls. So it doesn't contain Vaseline or mineral oil but Lisa Price certainly seemed to formulate it to act like it. And as if that weren't enough the liquid grease had the nerve to be gritty. Must be bad quality control at the Carols Daughter Plant.

The ingredients are all natural. But like all her other products I tried it has cheap corn oil and soy oil as the main ingredients. It also contains Beeswax pretty high up there too.

Ingredients:
Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Beeswax (Cera Alba), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Fragrance, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Annatto Seed.

So in the least I HATE Carols Daughter Hair Balm. I'm so mad I spent twelve bucks for the junk. And why do I have the bad luck of having one more to try....?

I found this picture on the Carol's Daughter website. It's used to advertise the Dynamic Duo. I doubt that's hair is real though.Maybe it works better on fake hair.

Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey

Yes, another Carol's Daughter product even though I had bad results with the first. I was hoping to have better luck with some of her other products.

It claims:

This herbal infused pomade improves manageability and tames fly-aways while delivering a sweet citrus scent. The blend's lack of water makes it ideal for those combating frizzies. Alkanet, an herb native to the Mediterranean, provides this hair dress with its bright, citrus hue. Nettles help soothe scalp irritation. Sage stimulates the scalp and offers antimicrobial benefits.
The texture reminds me of grease. It melts easily in between palms. I wouldn't agree with the description. It doesn't smell citrusy. Sometimes it smells like a very pleasent flower blend, other times it's pretty similar to honey. And sometimes I smell a bubblegum scent. It doesn't last in the hair very long though.

I agree with its claim that it provides shine. If you need shine this product gives lots of it. As for managing frizz. Not really in this curly head of mine. Maybe for straight hair. I have used some to slick back hair and it felt very soft and stayed back pretty well. As for moisture this provides very little. I like it better on wet or damp hair as it felt a little greasy when I used it on my dry hair.

The ingredients are alright. This particular product is all natural unlike the other Carols Daughter product I used. The main ingredient is corn oil...and there is some Beeswax in it.

Ingredients

Corn Oil infused with Lavender,Sage Leaf, Red Clover, Rosemary, Rose Petal Red, Blue Malva, Nettle, Beeswax, Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Fragrance, Alkanet Root For Color, Annato Seed

It costs me $9.50 for four ounces but you can purchase the 8 ounce for $15.50. I do think it is a bit over priced and I also think there are cheaper alternatives. I do think this would be better for pressed hair as it is water free or for relaxed hair because of the texture and the shine it provides.

Overall, it was just OK for me.

Blue Magic Condition Hair Dress

Don't play me. I know you know about that blue magic. It's old school and damn near everyone has had this junk in their hair at some time. It's also probably the most feared hair product on the hair boards because it has large amounts of petrolatum and mineral oil. It also has an appalling amount of blue coloring.

And yes, I know that mineral and petrolatum are supposed to be bad for your hair but I can never just take somebody's word for it. And this is gonna sound bad but I also bought this stuff for sentimental reason's. I used it back in high school and I just wanted to smell it again.

, I can honestly say I'm over it. The smell isn't great. And being that this is grease it can funk up your hair. I wouldn't use this if I were a co-washer. But it's not THAT hard to shampoo out. So let's get down to it. I dont really have that many good things to say about this stuff. It makes my hair greasy and dry at the same time. Amazing, hnh? The only thing about it that was good ( and that was less then average was that it held my twists, but virtually anything holds my twists). And when it gets right down to it, I HATE how blue it is. I keep thinking the blue is seeping into my scalp....

As far as the anti-breakage..I can't really say..I mean my hair is not breaking and was probably not going to start seeing as I don't use any heat or do anything damaging to my hair.

Now as far as the ingredients, I don't think mineral oil and petrolatum is as bad as they make it out to be. I don't think it does anything to promote growth, but I also don't think it hinders. As for moisturizing, it leaves alot to be desired. As do the ingredients. which are essentially mineral oil, petrolatum, and blue stuff.

And I can see this irritating to people who are sensitive to certain coloring.
