Pooka Nectar Hair Oil and Treatment Review

I made it to Season 6 of Game of Thrones. I'm surprised I have made it this far- usually this is about where it started falling apart for me. I found the Mereen storyline really boring as well as the Dorne storyline. Almost forgot about the Iron Island storyline- but that was mega boring as well. The only interesting part of the show was the stuff with the High Sparrow (he was a great "villain" that wasn't really a villain- cause shouldn't we all be on his side?) and the stuff going on at Castle Black. Hopefully I can make it through this time and then I'll be switching to  Christmas movies and getting into watching all the classics and a few more I haven't seen.

In the meantime, hair oil.

Pooka claims:

Feed your hair everything it deserves with our delicious Hair Nectar. A quadfecta of goodness with lemon, rosemary, peppermint & lavender essential oils.  Perfect to use in your next hot oil treatment or just for daily use.

Pair it with our lush hair butter for a supernova of hair goopery.

Ingredients: Avocado Oil, Olive oil, Beeswax, Rosemary, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint  Essential Oils & Fragrance

I haven't tried a lot of this brand- but what I have tried I really like. They use glass packaging, the ingredients are great and the prices aren't outrageous.

I've had this hair oil for years- mostly because I just forget about using a hair oil. It's not something I need- I don't have scalp issues or dry scalp. But if I did I think I would use it more often. Because I do like the ingredients. But it is a heavy oil so I only like using it has an oil treatment before I wash my hair.

It might be a good one to use if just want to promote a healthy scalp which is the best for health and growth.  I probably could have used more at the front of my hair that seemed to have thinned a little in the front after using the Mielle products. But my hair is back to normal anyway.

I think it's great for your scalp though and if I was a devoted hair oil user this is the one I would go for.

It smells nice. And even though I have had it for years it still smells great. The scent is hard to describe but it's a bright and pleasant scent.

It comes in a brown glass apothecary. My favorite type of packaging. I love anything in glass over plastic.

The ingredients are exactly what I like to see. I am looking at the site now and it seems a little different from what's on my bottle...not sure if the ingredients changed or if they didn't fully list everything. You could definitely DIY something yourself a bit cheaper....but I think this is a nice brand to support if you can't DIY.

Ingredients:

Olive oil, Avocado Oil, Rosemary, Lavender, Peppermint and Lemon Essential Oil Blend, Dried Lemon Peel, Rosemary and Lavender Buds, Fragrance

Overall, it's a great hair oil. It's one I would recommend if it has a place in your hair routine.

Chagrin Valley Chamomile and Citrus Shampoo Bar Review

Have ya'll heard about the latest Christmas craze? A Ralph Lauren Christmas. I can't remember if I talked about this already- but basically classic Christmas decorations. And take that and make it a trend and people are out spending money, likely buying what they already have. Personally I'm a fan of tacky Christmas. That's my childhood. Homemade decorations and whatever was on sale....made for a homey and cozy Christmas. Nowadays Christimas has to look like it's out of an un-lived in and cold catalogue. What I want to see is a plastic free Christmas decoration challenge. Or something a little more unique and creative.

Chagrin Valley claims:

An infusion of scalp-soothing botanicals blends with soapnuts, apple juice, kaolin clay and a refreshing citrus essential oils to create a natural shampoo that adds body and sheen, helps tame an oily scalp without over-drying, and makes hair feel silky and smooth.

A natural shampoo infused with organic soapnuts. Soapnuts, called "aritha or reetha" in Ayurvedic medicine, have long been known for their benefits for healthy hair and scalp, and have been used for centuries as an anti-hair loss shampoo.

Their natural antifungal and antibacterial properties may help with dandruff. The natural saponins not only cleanse hair without drying, but they also add body and sheen and make hair feel thicker, silky, and smooth.

  • Cold pressed organic apple juice helps with dandruff and itchy scalp and makes hair shiny, silky, and manageable
  • Organic chamomile and yarrow flowers bring out highlights in blonde hair and add sheen to dark hair
  • Citrus essential oils and kaolin clay tame an oily scalp without over-drying
  • A great natural shampoo for normal to oily hair

🍃NATURAL, VEGAN & ECO-FRIENDLY: We are committed to healthy skin, healthy people, and a healthy planet. Packaged in recyclable boxes, there is Zero Waste & No Plastic. No synthetic ingredients. No fragrance oils, dyes, sulfates, silicones, or preservatives. Made with ingredients that are biodegradable, Certified Organic, non-GMO, cruelty-free, sustainably produced, and ethically traded.

I've had this shampoo bar for years at this point. This is the last of a haul I bought quite a while ago. I think it's a great company so I probably will still go ahead and pick up more when I finally run out of this one.

This bar is meant for oily hair...which I don't have but I still really like anyway. I think it does a better job of getting oil buildup from hair product out.  It's also good after a hot oil treatment. So it's not just great for naturally oily haired people.

This one doesn't have a particular scent. It just smells like a soap bar- and it has the same underlying scent of other Chagrin Valley scents. I do prefer something a little more scented but it doesn't bother me that much. I just make sure to follow up with a nice smelling conditioner.

It is a shampoo bar- that means no plastic bottle when you are done. Just recycle the box and move on. I always convince myself that it's harder to use a shampoo bar- and it's really not. The only thing is I don't like to use it exclusively. I feel I get best results when I switch with a commercial shampoo. So I try to use it every other shampoo. It's not as stripping and it doesn't immediately tangle my hair like some SLS shampoos meant for oily hair. It lathers up pretty well and rinses easily and cleanly. I don't feel like my hair is coated, I am just left with clean hair that is ready for the next step. I think it's really important to read the tips on the website for best results but I haven't had any trouble. I prefer this type of bar to the ones that have heavy butters and oils.

I love a good natural shampoo bar.  I think they have some of the best ingredients.  I can see on the website they seem to have changed some of the ingredients around- I can't speak to the new bar but they look like they would work similarly?

Ingredients:

Organic Sunflower Oil infused with Botanicals (Chamomile, Yarrow, Calendula), Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Extra Virgin Olive oil, Organic Castor Oil, Organic Sustainable Palm Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Organic Cold Pressed Apple Juice, Organic Jojoba oil, Water, Organic Canola Oil, Organic Soap nuts, Kaolin Clay, Essential Oils of Grapefruit, bergamot, Litsea, Lime, Lemon, Organic Rosemary Extract.

Overall, it's a nice shampoo bar- it gets your hair clean without stripping it and drying it out. If you use a lot of oil or have a lot of build up by the time wash day comes around- I would recommend it! When I do eventually use this bar up, I plan to order another three to try out.

Bumble and Bumble BB Creme De Coco Conditioner

I have been steady watching Game of Thrones but currently on a break. I made it to the Red Wedding which is further than I usually get. And then the purple wedding. I remember watching the red wedding for the first time, I remember where I was, how I was sitting...really just everything about it. And I remember the shock that had me gaping, staring open mouthed in shock at what happened. That scene is probably the most shocking thing I had seen on TV. I had to google it and make sure I had actually watched the right show. I thought someone was playing a cruel joke on me. I just knew Rob Stark would lead us (I become a character of whatever show I'm watching in my mind) to victory.  When Ned Stark died I was also stunned but nothing like the feelings of watching that. I don't think any other TV show has been as memorable as some of the Game of Throne shows (season 1-4).  I sure do miss that show. I don't think TV will ever be as good again.

But anyway...we are here to talk conditioner.

BB claims:

This conditioner helps restore sheen and softness, improve flexibility, hydrate, and reduce frizz. An indulgent conditioner for rich moisture.

FORMULATED FOR

Ideal for Medium to Thick hair types looking for rich moisture and softness.

Patterns: Curly, Wavy
Diameters: Medium, Thick
Conditions: Untreated, Dry

FRAGRANCE

This product, with its creamy coconut scent, was created for coconut lovers.
BENEFITS
hydrate

shine

de-frizz

Made in USA

I reviewed the shampoo a little while back but I wanted to give the conditioner more use before I gave my official review on it. As you can see, I really went for it and bought the largest size- 33.8 ounce. It's a monster. I guess I just really didn't want to buy anymore conditioner for awhile? And it was on sale as well as I had a gift card. So I got it for a good price.

I didn't like the shampoo. For my hair type, it is just too drying  and the conditioner doesn't put back enough moisture. . So I don't use them together. I use them with other things...they just don't make a good pairing for me.

I think it's decent though when using it with a hydrating shampoo. It does need time to do its thing. I can't just slap it on, let it sit a minute and rinse. My hair needs a minimum of an hour. Longer if I want to use it to detangle. Of which it does OK with that. It doesn't provide much "slip" but with the right brush I can deal.

It's a very thick texture. Takes a bit to spread it. And that's OK. I like a thick conditioner. It always just seems it will work better. It's easy to rinse out. And it leaves my hair feeling....OK. Nothing to write home about. I will say that even though it has heavy oils it doesn't coat or weigh down my hair. My hair seems lightweight, curls are clumped, slightly elongated and looks healthy/shiny.

The bottle I bought did not come with a pump- one of the first things I did was buy the pump though. Handling the bottle without a pump wasn't great. I don't recommend. I will keep the pump long after the conditioner is gone, just in case I buy a different type of conditioner in a large bottle. That way I don't have to buy it again. I think it was $3.00 off Amazon. I'm ok with having to buy it separate. I think pumps are harder to recycle so not including it on every bottle might save the earth plastic. Or at least that's what I assume. I think I am also saving plastic by buying the economical large bottle. I hope. I'll still put it in the recycle when I finally use it up. I've had it almost forever and still have half a bottle left.

Almost forgot to mention the scent. At first I was disappointed in the scent. I thought it smelled like Suave. Really it smells so much better than Suave. Some coconut scents can smell a little sour- not this though. It's a more complex tropical coconut scent that smells bubbly and clean. I really enjoy the scent. I kinda wish it lasted longer in my hair.

The ingredients are OK. It has a lot of fun butters lower down in the list. We have coconut oil/extract, lady's thistle extract, mallow, meadow foam seed oil, murumuru butter and on and on. It has a lot of stuff that I believe it great for the hair. I don't think it is in large amounts but all those oils and butter don't weight down my hair. And most importantly- no silicones. I will sometimes buy a lotion or moisturizer with silicones ( I always complain about it too) but no hair products. Unless it's a heat protectant.

Ingredients:

Water\Aqua\Eau, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Stearalkonium Chloride, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract, Silybum Marianum (Lady's Thistle) Extract, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Extract, Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Aleurites Moluccana (Kukui) Seed Oil, Ximenia Americana Seed Oil, Equisetum Arvense (Horsetail) Extract, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Leaf Extract, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-59, Butylene Glycol, Vinegar\Acetum\Vinaigre, Tocopherol, BHT, Citric Acid, Fragrance (Parfum), Limonene, Linalool, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol <ILN49419>

Overall, it's not bad. It's not the best conditioner I have ever used in my hair- but pair it with the right shampoo and it's quite pleasant to use. I don't think I would repurchase though...I can say I don't regret buying this great big old bottle.

Bumble and Bumble Creme De Coco Coconut Shampoo Review

Have ya'll heard Makeupalley is shutting down?- I can't believe it. It's what started my love of reviews and I originally started this blog as my very own space to do reviews on my natural hair journey. I still check the site today- it's good for checking reviews on older formulas and products that have been discontinued. It's good if you like to research. And if you like honest reviews. These days reviews are mostly on social media and so many are sponsored or giving good reviews because they want you to click their link so they can make money off of you. Or they are 10 second clips with no real information, I'll be sorry to see it go.

Bumble and Bumble claims:

Extra frizz reduction with a tropical touch.

WHAT IT IS

This shampoo with rich moisture helps restore sheen + softness, improve flexibility, and reduce frizz. Plus, its fragrant lather make cleansing a can't-resist indulgence.

FORMULATED FOR

Ideal for Medium to Thick hair types looking for rich moisture and softness.

Patterns: Curly, Wavy
Diameters: Medium, Thick
Conditions: Untreated, Dry

FRAGRANCE

This product, with its creamy coconut scent, was created for coconut lovers.
BENEFITS
Hydrate, De-frizz

With a blend of tropical oils, featuring Kukui Nut and Coconut oil, and Murumuru butter, this shampoo helps restore sheen and softness, improve flexibility, hydrate, and reduce frizz.

KEY INGREDIENTS

Coconut Oil helps condition hair.

I just realized this is a new brand to me. I remember seeing some of their products in OG Essence magazines when I was a kid. I saw a few of their products on must have lists for celebs that I considered to have nice hair.  It was back in the day though when relaxers were in so I was really curious on how I would like it on my natural hair.

I still avoid silicones and I believe quite a few of their lines do use silicones- this one doesn't so I snapped it up! No silicones but it does have nice oils- Coconut, Murumuri and Kukui.

I bought the 8 ounce bottle- but I really wish I bought the sampler bottle. I'm not a fan of it. It's very concentrated and the smallest amount will give you a bunch of rich, thick and bubbly lather.  So it is made to last. Not watered down whatsoever.

The problem is that I as I put it on I can feel it drying and tangling up my hair. Hello Tangles. And I don't feel like it's really hydrating to my hair so I need a good conditioner to put back what was stripped.

It does clean well though. Your hair will be squeakly clean which I do kinda like. But I can't deal with the dryness and tangles.

Almost forgot to talk about the scent- when I first used it it reminded me of the Suave Coconut Line that I used years and years ago. I was a little disappointed but as I lathered it more I like the scent more than the Suave line. It doesn't have that "sour" scent to it that some fruity scents get.  I've come to really enjoy the scent. I don't think it lingers much in my hair though.

Ingredients:

Water\Aqua\Eau, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate, Sodium Chloride, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract, Silybum Marianum (Lady's Thistle) Extract, Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Extract, Astrocaryum Murumuru Seed Butter, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract, Aleurites Moluccanus Seed Oil, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch, Cocamide MEA, Glycerin, PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Glycol Distearate, Laureth-10, Propylene Glycol, Polyquaternium-10, Butylene Glycol, Quaternium-82, Polyquaternium-59, Acrylates Copolymer, Sodium Hydroxide, Magnesium Chloride, Magnesium Nitrate, Citric Acid, Fragrance (Parfum), Limonene, Linalool, BHT, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol <ILN99030>

Overall, not for me. I did buy the huge bottle of the matching conditioner- but I'm planning to review it later.

Aveda Shampure Nurturing Shampoo and Conditioner Review

I definitely got scissor happy yesterday when I "trimmed" my hair. The good news is that my hair grew back from the last cut but. I basically butchered my hair and probably cut at minimum four inches. My ends just felt so dry though...I think I couldn't get it smooth because I didn't use enough product so the next time I do a blow out, I'm going to make sure I get my ends coated. You live and you learn.

Anyway. I have been taking so much better care of my hair and really paying attention to the products I have been trying. I really like Aveda and I want to try all their lines...mostly because their products are usually silicone free. And I like avoiding silicones (except when I am using heat!).

I bought this for my Mom one holiday but she didn't seem that into it....

Aveda claims:

Smells like an Aveda. 35 Years of an Icon. Nurture your hair and calm your senses. Instantly recognizable aroma of shampure.

Responsible Packaging, Responsible Manufacturing

Aveda markets this shampoo for everyone. You're basic, everyday, good for the entire family shampoo. Or at least that's how they sell it on QVC. I didn't know that when I bought it but I would have bought it anyway.

I think we should start with the scent. I am not a fan of the scent. It does smell like it has essential oils. I can't pick out any particular one except I think there is citronella in it. Or maybe it's the petitgrain which is an oil I especially dislike.  Especially the conditioner.  It doesn't smell horrible and unbearable...it smells like something likable. However I just can't bring myself to like it. That's largely a reason I would not repurchase it. I want to enjoy the scent of whatever shampoo/conditioner I am using.

As for how it works...it's fine. It gets my hair clean without drying it out. The conditioner does what it claims as well. Both work OK . I don't feel like it strips or dries out my hair. But I think my hair could use just a little bit moire moisture. As my hair as gotten used to it though, it seems to hydrate more and more. I don't notice my hair needing more hydration as much as I did when I first started using it. Maybe it's improving my hair long term? Hmmmm.

I do like to use conditioners to detangle my hair sometimes and I think this one works OK. I need to make sure to leave it on long enough that it does its job. But it's OK. I'm not wowed by it. But it works.

As for shine, I think it makes my hair look healthy...but not as shiny as the Rosemary Mint line. As long as my hair isn't dull though, it works for me!

As for the claims of weightless hydration...I would agree. My hair doesn't feel weighed down, heavy, or greasy. I find that especially helpful because I feel it's a better canvas for curl gels/creams.

Ingredients:

Shampoo:

Water\Aqua\Eau, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamide Mipa, Propanediol, Babassuamidopropyl Betaine, Crambe Abyssinica (Abyssinian) Seed Oil, Bixa Orellana (Annatto) Seed Extract, Glycerin, Peg-60 Almond Glycerides, Polysorbate 80, Polyquaternium-10, Sodium Chloride, Citric Acid, Fragrance (Parfum), Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene, Sodium Phytate, Benzoic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Annatto (Ci 75120) <ILN45473>

Conditioner:

Water\Aqua\Eau, Cetearyl Alcohol, Propanediol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Crambe Abyssinica (Abyssinian) Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Lactic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Fragrance (Parfum), Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate <ILN44970>

Overall, I can see why it's marketed for everyone. I think it could work for a wide variety of hair types/textures. I just wish I liked the scent better and that it was a smidge more hydrating. I still have a ton of the shampoo left and running a bit low on conditioner but when I do finally use this one up, I plan on getting my hands on more Aveda. I just really like the brand....Maybe I'll try the Be Curly line next...

Garnier Fructis Oil Repair 3 Shampoo Review

I'm taking advantage of this much needed three day weekend to "reset" myself. I have entered into ultimate laziness this past week- the only plus being I was too lazy to cook/eat so I lost a couple pounds. But along with that I need to get back into regular reviews. I've had this shampoo for awhile- I really don't like it that much. I only bought it because I wanted a really stripping shampoo to get some silicones out my hair. Silicones make my hair so stiff and eventually dry- I was unknowingly using a shampoo that contained them.

Garnier claims:

Dry, damaged hair is usually very brittle and needs special care. The ideal solution: the Garnier Fructis Oil Repair 3 Strengthening Shampoo. It combines 3 weightless oils of avocado, shea and olive with triglycerides to provide the hair with a repairing care.
A special combination of vegetable fruiting ingredients, vitamins B3 and B6 as well as lemon protein additionally strengthens the hair and gives it a healthier, more powerful appearance. The result: The hair is immediately nourished, is more supple and full of shine.
The Garnier Fructis Oil Repair 3 Strengthening Conditioner has been specially developed to satisfy the needs of dry hair. The gentle formula of the conditioner is ideal for daily use.

Garnier is committed to improving environmental and social impact throughout the product lifecycle, including production and product application. We would like to make these effects available to you comprehensively and transparently, so that you can make more sustainable purchasing decisions.

The methodology was developed with the help of independent scientific experts and the data was verified by Bureau Veritas, a globally recognized auditor.

I bought this because it was super cheap. And I used to use a lot of Garnier back when I had a relaxer because it was cheap and smelled fruity and nice. I also tried a lot of their "curly" hair stuff when I newly natural. A lot of them work really well....but the silicones aren't great for my hair.

I wanted this to strip the silicones from my hair- but still be nourishing and I thought it would be with the extra oils they add to it like the avocado, coconut, and olive oil. I mostly just find it to be extremely stripping. It lathers like crazy..you will have bubbles and lather everywhere. But it is extremely drying and feels as though it's tangling as I am washing. And then all that and my hair/scalp don't even seem to get that clean.

Once it dries my hair feels like a brillo pad.

The ingredients aren't very bad- but I suspect it has a lot of the "lather" ingredient which is why my hair does not like it. Other than that it has good oils, shea butter, and some skin care ingredients which I am guessing are good for the scalp?

Ingredients:

INGREDIENTS: AQUA / WATER • SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE • COCO-BETAINE • PPG-5-CETETH-20 • OLEA EUROPAEA FRUIT OIL / OLIVE FRUIT OIL • HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL / SUNFLOWER SEED OIL • ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS LEAF EXTRACT / ROSEMARY LEAF EXTRACT • COCOS NUCIFERA OIL / COCONUT OIL • PERSEA GRATISSIMA OIL / AVOCADO OIL • DICAPRYLYL ETHER • GLYCERIN • PEG-55 PROPYLENE GLYCOL OLEATE • PEG-60 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL • SODIUM CHLORIDE • SODIUM HYDROXIDE • PROPYLENE GLYCOL • HYDROLYZED CORN PROTEIN • HYDROLYZED SOY PROTEIN • HYDROLYZED WHEAT PROTEIN • HYDROXYPROPYL GUAR HYDROXYPROPYLTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE • CITRIC ACID • OLEYL ALCOHOL • POLYQUATERNIUM-7 • TOCOPHEROL • SODIUM BENZOATE • SALICYLIC ACID • PHENOXYETHANOL • CI 14700 / RED 4 • CI 19140 / YELLOW 5 • LINALOOL • COUMARIN • LIMONENE • PARFUM / FRAGRANCE (F.I.L. Z70012051/1).

It does smell really nice though. I always like the way Garnier products smell. But that's the only real positive I have. I probably won't use the rest in my hair. I think it is going to be demoted to makeup brush cleaner.

Hair Products as a Kid

I thought it might be fun to break up the constant reviews with something different. I've been reading the hair boards- of course- and one thing you always hear people mention is how back in the day their mom used grease and this or that and their hair was down to theirs butts. I really think it was the fact that when we were younger we always had plaits, didn't use relaxers or heat and that allowed the hair to flourish.

So that got me thinking back to what was used on me as a kid. I never had hair down to my butt. It got to a good length but it always shrunk so you can never tell how long my hair truly is. My hair is the same today, I embrace the shrinkage.  It was definitely longer when I was younger...then it seemed really short in 5th/6th grade. Which is around the time I got a relaxer. I want to talk more about the relaxer in a another post...

First thing I remember was White Rain. I don't remember if my Mom used this often to wash my hair...but I remember the bottle when I was around 5/6 and that was when I was bored enough to just randomly read product packing.

I used to hate leaning over the tub to get my hair washed. Sometime later she switched to this- I think she used this more on my sister though...I remember the watermelon scent and the blue bottle the most. I didn't know they discontinued these now....

For conditioner- she loved this Mane and Tail one. Now that I think about it, I think she used the Shampoo sometimes too. I'm not sure if horses really use this stuff- but I guess the thinking is if it gives horses long thick, and shiny hair- why not use it? I don't know if it's truly used on horses or just marketing but  I do remember buying it in high school and not liking it much. But I did have a relaxer then so maybe I should try it on my relaxed hair.

Next up detangler. . I was looking for this a few months back but it's long since discontinued. We always had a bottle of this in the cabinet. I thought the kids on the bottle were so cute growing up and loved their hair! I don't remember if it worked...but I did really love the way it smelled. I even remember the comb my Mom used to use- I feel like I saw it a few years back- it was a Goody Teal Comb with beige and white on the tips. I don't have the best memories of getting my hair detangled with it though- My Mom was ROUGH! I used to think I was tender-headed but I think she just didn't know how to be gentle.

And GREASE! Who doesn't have memories of getting their scalp greased. Getting your hair parted and then a healthy slather of grease. I ditched it after high school. But I did have a brief stint with Blue Magic grease. My Mom kept the BB Super Gro grease on hand- she used Sulfur 8 herself. I never really had scalp problems - no dryness and no itchiness...unless I used certain hair products. These days there are better oils- but I might buy a jar for nostalgia purposes if I see it in the store.

I think that about sums it up...very simple. I can't think of anything else used on my  hair as a kid.

But I did want to share my new shower cap. I bought it from Regal Ivy. I usually use the cheap plastic ones for conditioning my hair- but I need a nice one for the next time I straighten my hair and I wanted a good quality one. This one is handmade in a beautiful color from a black owned company- Regal Ivy!
It has satin on the inside too which is in a pretty green shade- so you can wear it reversible. I'll be showering in style 😁

What do you remember using as a kid? Are the products still around?

UPDATED to add Tressemme! My Mom loved buying the big ol bottle's of Tresseme. I don't remember them working that well in my hair- but they seemed to work for her! Their conditioners always smelled like grout to me though.

My Hair Closet

I thought this might be a fun post to do- since I'm still currently obsessed with hair. I don't usually keep a lot of hair products- I used to limit it to one of each product until I started ordering from Chagrin Valley and I like to order those three at a time. Nowadays, I like to keep three products in each category- except for some things that I have more or less of.

My hair type is 4. I'm not sure of the number after- possible 4c based on shrinkage. I don't do much to define "curls". I tend to just slap leave in conditioner in-lately I have been doing that in the shower. Then I slap gel in it, shake my head and go. I also have fine to medium strands and very dense hair. As for porosity, I think I have medium but I haven't done the strand test yet.

So here's what I have:

Chagrin Valley: Carrot Milk and Honey Shampoo and Chamomile & Citrus Shampoo. I really like shampoo bars- they aren't as drying in my hair. Also they have better ingredients. I went off of using these for a while but I am rotating them back in.

Garnier Oil Repair Shampoo- I bought this for cheap. I just wanted something to clean my hair of all the silicones that coated my hair when I tried some Aussie shampoo and conditioner. My hair was feeling STIFF from that and cones can be hard to get out. So I bought this to get them out. I think it worked. I've used this a few times- I think it makes my hair feel like a brillo pad though. I still need to try it a few more times to be sure. It does smell nice though.

Aveda Rosemary Mint Shampoo- I bought this to clarify. I know I have the Garnier but I think I liked this one better. It was on sale too. I'm just going to keep it around to clarify after straightening- which I rarely ever do.

Aveda Shampure Nurturing Shampoo and Conditioner- I want to try all of the Aveda lines and this was next on the list. I think these aren't as hydrating as I need but they do OK. I still need to use them a few more times before I review them so a review is coming in the next couple of months.

Hask Keratin Smooth Smoothing Deep Conditioner- I've been meaning to use this for a minute but I get lazy and then grab something else. I think I'll use it this weekend. Or maybe next weekend. Not sure yet. I do really like the Coconut version of their deep conditioner though.

Aveda Nutri-Plenish Dêep Moisture Conditioner- Just reviewed this one and I love it. I don't love the price but it works really well for my hair to add moisture.

Mielle Rosemary Mint Strengthening Leave-In Conditioner and Pomegranate and Honey Leave In- I'm trying to use up the Rosemary Mint one, I'm just a little tired of it and ready to move on. I tend to use one leave in at a time so once that one is done I am moving on to the Pomegranate one.

Aveda Cherry Almond Softening Leave In- I've used this one when I straightened my hair and it was really soft..I'm pretty sure it was this! I need to use it a couple more times but so far I really like it.

I have three wash n go products. I use the Camille Rose Curl Maker everyday and I'm about half way through. I really like it, the ingredients are great and it does define curls. In my reserve I have the Taliah Waajid Curl Sealer. I used it once and I like it, but I need to use it a few more times. I also bought Miss Jessie's Honey Curls. I really likes their multi-cultural curls so figured I would give this one a try.

I almsot forgot, I have the Taliah Waajid Detangling Leave-In. I love it for detangling and as a leave in. It can feel drying when you put it on and like it won't help detangle but it does. It works well with my Tangle Teezer especially.

I have Chi Silk Infusion. Strictly to use as a heat protectant. And it worked really well for that. It also makes your hair feel "silky".

I have Vatika oil. I never use it because the packaging is a pain. It's probably expired. I'm still going to put it back in my hair closet. Maybe I'll check to see if it's OK and then repackage it to actually use. But likely I won't do that either.

And last up..I almost forgot I had this. They are the Pooka Hair Butter and Oil. Every couple of months I tell myself I am going to do scalp massages before I wash my hair, I do it maybe 2 times..and then forget about it. I want to grow back what I cut off...so many this time I will actually stick with it. Healthy scalp grows healthy hair.

Last up..Colour Wax. I got this in the mail yesterday and then ordered three more colors. It's so fun. I'm so excited to do my whole head. It's very subtle but it's cute! Can't believe I waited this long to try it out.

And that's all! Not too many products- but I definitely need to use up some before I buy more. Although I am thinking of adding another conditioner. I think I might get a huge bottle so I don't have to buy any for a very, very long time.
